Giovanni Copelli (b. 1989, Correggio; lives and works in Athens, Greece) is an Italian contemporary painter whose work bridges classical tradition and modern digital observation. He holds a BFA in Painting from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London. Copelli also co-founded independent art space INTERNO4 (Bologna) and curated a number of artistic projects over the years.

Following early solo art exhibitions exploring mythology and historical archetypes—such as Amanti (2017) and A Cavallo (2020) at Operativa Arte Contemporanea (Rome) and Amor Sacro (2020) at Union Pacific (London)—his recent studio production marks a decisive shift toward intensive, observational realist painting. In his current landscape and object series, showcased in the 2024 solo exhibition Paesaggi Italiani at Ondo (Pistoia), Copelli utilizes his smartphone camera as an optical device to crop, isolate, and archive fleeting fragments of everyday reality.

The resulting oil paintings are structured, time-intensive re-elaborations of this digital material. Through a meticulous studio practice where layers of paint stratify over many days, Copelli transforms a fleeting snapshot into a permanent, tactile object of contemplation. Balancing fidelity to optical truth with a vivid painterly touch, Giovanni Copelli’s artwork moves beyond simple photographic replication, offering art collectors and curators a profound meditation on the contemporary gaze frozen into an eternal form.
